GERMANY (Bollenhut)

Made of white-washed straw and covered with 14 pompoms, the bollenhut has been worn since the mid 18th C by Protestant women in three villages in the Black Forest, where the majority of the population is Catholic. Unmarried women wore hats with red pompoms, married women covered their hats with black ones.
