In many countries until the 1950’s, child mortality was a problem due to infectious diseases, poor sanitation, limited access to medical care, and lack of education about personal health practices. In China, mothers made hats with animal faces whose fierce expressions and sharp teeth were intended to keep their children safe from harm by frightening away evil spirits. Many of the decorative features of children’s hats expressed the hope for good fortune, prosperity, and future success. The Chinese character on the front of this hat, wang 王, means “king.”
