SOUTH AFRICA Zulu Woman’s Isicholo

An example of how fashion changes over time, the Isicholo has evolved from a flared hairstyle worn by married Zulu women into various styles of head coverings. A feature of a Zulu woman’s traditional dress, the Isicholo was first worn by a woman at her wedding to signify her new status as a married woman. Today, the hat is worn mostly for ceremonies, important occasions, and public pageants.
